Why Now is the Time to Develop a Precision Medicine Strategy

Tuesday, August 16, 2016 | 11:30am - 1:00pm

Hosted at the McNamara Alumni Center at University of MN

By 2025 genome sequencing will likely produce in excess of forty exabytes of data.  Will your organization be ready?

As more research IT and health system technologists focus on how actions can deliver better patient outcomes for their organizations, most would agree they need a strategy for precision medicine in order to deliver on this vision.

It is likely your roadmap includes a need to provide technology, storage, and analysis for hundreds of terabytes or petabytes of genomic or other data, all while merging that with phenotypes or electronic health records.

When achieved, you will have a precision medicine platform or integrated bio-repository.  But how to get there?  Research institutes, Colleges of Medicine, and other leading health organizations have all embraced Cloudera as the Big Data platform of choice to ingest ‘omics and merge that data with a breadth of other insights.

Cloudera has been at the forefront of managing precision medicine data with a fast, easy to implement, secure solution.  Come hear your local Cloudera team discuss how precision medicine is a perfect illustration of Big Data capabilities, and how relying upon technology platforms of the past may fail as healthcare requirements increase.

The session will cover:

  • The value of Hadoop as the basis for Big Data and why Open Source is critical as you look to expand your data management capabilities.
  • Cloudera partners who are investing in Precision Medicine platforms and the innovative solutions they have developed.
  • The steps you need to take as you evaluate options for delivering on the promise of Precision Medicine.

Shawn Dolley is Cloudera's Industry Leader, Health & Life Science. Shawn leads the Cloudera precision medicine and Cloudera Omics solution vision, roadmap and offering, and helps customers develop use cases on the business side of research discovery and translational medicine. Shawn co-led the Healthcare & Life Science industry practice at Netezza, and when acquired by IBM was a part of IBM's Public Sector industry practice. Shawn designed a Health Outcomes Analytic Appliance in conjunction with Brigham & Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He has worked with Dr. Paul Grundy, the godfather of PCMH, on methods to apply analytics to large populations and real world evidence. He has presented to and collaborated with multiple providers, payers, pharma, and research organizations, as well as Big Data technology providers. Shawn has worked in data modeling, metrics, analytics and workflow since 1995. Today, Shawn’s most focused work is on repeatable, affordable solutions for whole genome/exome downstream analytics at scale matched with clinical/phenotype and public data, toward precision medicine and biomarker & drug discovery.
