The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) is an industry-wide framework for protecting consumer credit card data. Any company that stores, processes or transmits credit card data must comply with PCI-DSS by properly securing and protecting the data. 

According to the 2014 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Reports, payment card data remains one of the easiest types of data to convert to cash, and therefore the preferred choice of criminals. In fact, 74 percent of attacks on retail, accommodation, and food services companies target payment card information.
