Reflecting on DTW Ignite: Trust, Sovereign AI, and the Telco-to-TechCo Evolution

Dr. Athul Prasad Global Director, AI Industry Solutions, Cloudera
Team in office

The telecommunications industry is done waiting. This is the overriding message I heard at DTW Ignite this year. For years, we have talked about digital transformation, but at this year’s event, the conversation shifted decisively from ambition to execution.

The event’s dominant theme was the imperative for operators to transition from traditional connectivity providers (TelCos) to AI-first technology companies (TechCos). Network automation and autonomous operations are no longer futuristic concepts; they are the immediate priorities required to break the cycle of stagnation and deliver accelerated margin growth. The industry is moving beyond pilot programs and looking for ways to safely embed AI at scale. However, as telecom leaders race toward an AI-native future, a major hurdle remains: getting the data house in order.

Customer Conversations: The Data Dilemma and the Need for Governance

Throughout the week, I had the privilege of speaking with numerous customers and industry leaders on the show floor. While the appetite for deploying AI at scale is massive, a recurring theme kept emerging in our conversations: building digital network automation is incredibly difficult because telco data is inherently siloed, massive in scale, and largely sits on-premises. Bringing AI to this highly distributed data presents a complex compliance and architectural challenge.

In these discussions, Cloudera’s core differentiators truly resonated. We explored how a unified, enterprise-grade data foundation is the absolute prerequisite for any meaningful network intelligence. You simply cannot deploy autonomous systems faster than you can govern them. Communications Service Providers (CSPs) are increasingly recognizing that robust security and governance must be baked into their architecture from day one. Without these guardrails, moving from basic machine learning experiments to actual autonomous networks is practically impossible.

Spotlight Session: Fast-Tracking Telco's Future

These critical themes took center stage during our spotlight session, Fast-tracking Telco's future: AI for Network Intelligence. During the session, we explored how telecom operators can deliver true AI-driven network automation based on robust, at-scale data platforms using agentic frameworks spanning from hybrid cloud to air-gapped on-prem environments.

Ian Holloway, Chief Architect at TM Forum, kicked things off with an insightful perspective on AI and data, setting the perfect context for the challenges ahead. Next, my colleague Jeremiah Morrow, Product Marketing Manager for Industry Solutions at Cloudera, discussed the core technological capabilities of the network data lakehouse. Jeremiah highlighted how this architecture lays the critical foundation for an edge-to-AI pipeline, enabling true network intelligence despite the industry’s relentless data silo challenges.

During my presentation, I focused on network evolution trends and the best practices for bridging the gap between raw network data and enterprise AI. I emphasized that achieving accelerated margin growth requires operators to fully embrace the TelCo-to-TechCo transition, built on a secure, telco-grade architectural foundation. AI is a powerful engine, but it requires the right fuel to drive business value.

However, the standout moment of the session came from our customer, Zain. Hamzeh Saud Aldraaee, Technical Marketing and Analytics General Manager at Zain, shared a brilliant use case on the value equation of AI and how they are turning intelligence into concrete business outcomes. Zain has done some incredible, cutting-edge work with AI and automation in their operations. Yet, amidst all the high-tech achievements, Hamzeh shared a profound piece of advice that stuck with everyone in the room. He noted that if he could do it all over again, he would have started with big data transformation much earlier in their journey. His quote perfectly encapsulates the industry's challenge: "You can't have digital transformation without big data transformation."

Driving Innovation: Panels and Catalyst Judging

Beyond the spotlight session, Cloudera’s footprint at the event extended into deeper industry collaborations. We proudly took part in various panel sessions, contributing to the broader dialogue on AI-native operating models, data readiness, and how to scale these innovations responsibly.

Additionally, we were thrilled to contribute as judges for the TM Forum Catalyst projects. The Catalyst program is always a phenomenal showcase of industry collaboration, bringing operators and technical partners together to solve real-world business challenges. It was inspiring to see firsthand how these proofs of concept are actively tackling the very data and AI governance hurdles we’ve been discussing, turning innovative ideas into practical, scalable solutions.

The Path Forward: Sovereign AI and Trust

As we look to the future and wrap up the learnings from DTW Ignite, it is clear that simply adopting more AI is not sufficient. As network autonomy increases, the risks from AI hallucinations to lack of data security and governance natively integrated into agentic workflows are significantly magnified in a telecom environment. This brings us to a critical realization: sovereign or private AI is a foundational enabler for trustworthy AI.

Communications Service Providers (CSPs) need absolute control over their data, their models, and their AI-driven decisions. They cannot afford to compromise on data residency, privacy, or auditability. At Cloudera, we are proud to be enabling our customers to build trustworthy AI in production environments, ensuring they have the strict governance and control required to scale safely.

To help the industry navigate this transition from responsible AI to fully governed and trustworthy AI, Cloudera recently sponsored a comprehensive report in collaboration with the TM Forum and the IBM Institute for Business Value (IBV). Based on a survey of 130 global operator leaders and in-depth executive briefings, the report explores how Communications Service Providers (CSPs) are scaling AI deployments, mitigating risks, and generating evidence of AI inputs and outputs.

I highly encourage you to read the full findings as you map out your own TechCo journey: Trust and assurance: the key to scaling AI deployments.

The telco AI era is here—let’s ensure we build it on a foundation we can trust.
