Cloudera Life Employee Spotlight: Meet Laurence Da Luz, Head of Forward Deployed Engineering
It’s easier than ever to build an AI prototype. With the tools available today, teams can turn ideas into impressive demos in just hours or days. But making those solutions work reliably at scale is much more difficult, and that’s where Laurence Da Luz has focused much of his career.
For more than 11 years at Cloudera, Laurence has worked with companies worldwide on ambitious data and AI projects. He started as a solutions architect and progressed into global leadership, gaining an understanding of how to put new technology to work inside large organizations. Now, as Head of Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) in Cloudera’s new Applied AI group, he’s using that experience to help customers turn AI ideas into real solutions.
As part of our ongoing series highlighting the leaders shaping Applied AI at Cloudera, we spoke with Laurence about his role and what it takes to move AI from promise to production at enterprise scale.
A Career Built Close to the Customer
Laurence has always focused on data, analytics, and AI. Before joining Cloudera, he was a data engineer at IBM’s Software Lab Services, building data solutions for enterprise customers. He later joined Hortonworks before its merger with Cloudera, as the company was expanding across Asia Pacific.
“I was part of the early team in the region, joining as the first Solutions Architect in Australia and one of the first in APAC,” Laurence said. “I worked directly with some of our largest customers, leading major data and AI projects into production on Cloudera.”
Those projects took Laurence across the world. “One of the unique things about Cloudera is that it gives me the opportunity to work with enterprises all over the world and across many different industries,” he said. “Earlyin my career, this broad exposure showed me how different organizations approach technology, transformation, and scale.”
Over time, he moved into leadership roles within Professional Services, eventually becoming the group’s Chief Technology Officer. “My role shifted from delivering individual customer solutions to driving how we scale our services and solutions capability more broadly across our global teams,” he said.
Laurence’s move to lead Forward Deployed Engineering within Cloudera’s Applied AI organization brings much of that experience together. “It has felt like a natural next step in my career, as it brings together different elements from my past experience across AI solutions, customer engineering, enterprise architecture, and scaling global practices.”
Closing the Last-Mile Gap in Enterprise AI
Today, Laurence leads Cloudera’s Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team, building a global group of AI/ML engineers who work directly with Cloudera customers. In this position, his focus is on building new capabilities while staying close to the customer problems and technologies shaping enterprise AI.
This work also creates a valuable feedback loop for the team. The lessons learned from customers can become reusable solutions and patterns, influence the product roadmap, and help Cloudera apply successful approaches more broadly.
“One of the interesting things happening with AI right now is that building a demo or a prototype has become incredibly easy,” Laurence said. “But there is still a huge gap between an AI prototype and something that a large enterprise can actually trust in production.”
That gap includes connecting AI to enterprise data and existing systems, addressing security and governance requirements, and making sure the solution can be trusted to deliver the intended outcome.
“Most of the complexity lives in the last mile,” Laurence said.
FDE helps customers close that gap by bringing AI and machine learning engineers directly into their environments to design, build, and test solutions using their data and systems.
A Window into What’s Next for Enterprise AI
By working closely with large enterprises, Laurence developed a clear view of how AI strategies are changing. He sees more interest in self-hosted AI models, as new open-weight models give organizations more choices for flexibility and cost. He also sees companies paying more attention to the broader system around the model.
“A lot of the gains in real-world AI applications aren’t coming from the model alone, but from the harness you build around it. Giving the model the right data and context, tools, orchestration, evaluation, and guardrails can dramatically change what the overall system is capable of,” Laurence said. “We’re also seeing a continued shift from question-and-answer experiences toward AI agents that can execute workloads and take actions across systems.”
Laurence sees that the organizations making real progress start with a clear business problem and a definition of success, backed by reliable, accessible data and the right governance to use it safely.
“AI solutions will often change how people work, not just the technology they use,” Laurence said. Building trust and understanding, and helping people see how their work will change can help them decide whether an AI investment really pays off.
Growing Alongside Cloudera
What Laurence values most about Cloudera is the people and the opportunities to grow. He’s found a collaborative culture where people share what they know and have the freedom to take on new challenges and shape their own path.
“There’s a strong culture of trust and ownership at Cloudera, where people are encouraged to step outside the boundaries of their role, take on new challenges, and shape their own path,” he said.
Outside of work, Laurence spends most of his time with his wife and their three-year-old son, with another baby on the way. He also plays music and enjoys experimenting with new technology, including a home automation project he is now working on. After years of solving tough tech problems at work, he still enjoys creating and tinkering at home.
