BNI uses AI to meet governance requirements and enhance customer offerings

Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) is a state-owned financial institution in Indonesia, serving more than 60 million customers annually. BNI has long been at the forefront of digital transformation of banking in the region and has recently expanded its partnership with Cloudera to scale AI across its enterprise, bringing its virtual capabilities to a singular environment. AI is not just technology; it empowers the entire banking ecosystem.

AI incorporation to meet regulatory needs

Having already adopted machine learning (ML) capabilities for services such as product recommendations, supply chain analytics, and a chatbot for product knowledge, among other key use cases, BNI sought to expand its already impressive array of applications.

BNI aimed to continue its digital transformation journey by leveraging AI to streamline operations, enhance security and governance, and manage data at scale. In the process, the bank planned to gain real-time data insights and further utilize them for ML applications, enabling it to send customers more relevant and personalized product recommendations.

While continually improving its digital capabilities, the bank must also adhere to stringent Indonesian regulatory compliance requirements while safeguarding sensitive internal and customer data. For example, gambling is illegal in Indonesia, and with the new AI applications, BNI was able to monitor customer transactions to foil any attempts at betting.

As a highly regulated financial institution, Cloudera is critical to BNI’s intention to integrate AI into its operations at enterprise scale–not only to outperform competitors but also to support its own data sovereignty goals and enhance fraud detection, predictive analytics capabilities, and the overall customer experience.

Ultimately, BNI aimed to enhance its range of services by making them better, smarter, and more trustworthy through the use of AI.

Innovation in banking solutions

BNI, which is pioneering the use of Cloudera AI Inference service globally, built on NVIDIA NIM microservices, initially in the cloud before transitioning to use in its own data centers. Thanks to the on-premises service, BNI can now utilize open-source large language models (LLMs) on NVIDIA accelerated computing to scale generative AI safely and maintain control over customer information.

The Indonesian bank is also accomplishing this goal by modernizing its platform with a decoupled storage and compute strategy using Cloudera Data Services, which will allow BNI to adapt quickly based on workload volumes and prioritize business users' workloads.

Full deployment of new AI capabilities is expected by the end of 2025, BNI is working with Cloudera to monitor performance and regulatory needs, ensuring that it remains one of the most technologically advanced banks in Indonesia.

With Cloudera’s AI Inference service built on NVIDIA, BNI now delivers more relevant recommendations to customers, streamlines operations, and safeguards transactions in real time – making banking services smarter, faster, and more trustworthy.”
